Nicolas Dupont-Aignan hailed Brexit as a blessing in disguise

Theresa May formally began Britain’s divorce from the EU on Tuesday, declaring that that there was no turning back but that she wanted to maintain strong political and economic ties with the bloc.

And the right wing independent candidate said Britain’s emancipation from Brussels was an “opportunity” for the remaining 27 member states still under EU rule.

Mr Dupont-Aignan said: “Brexit is an opportunity because it will lead to the renegotiation of EU treaties.”

The leader of Debout la France – Stand Up France – added that by voting to leave the EU, Britain had given Europeans a “shining lesson in democracy” before praising British officials for “respecting” the referendum result.

Mr Dupont-Aignan, however, said he would not push for a ‘Frexit’ referendum if he won the presidency, but would instead seek to put Europe “back on the right track”.

He said: “Europeans are miserable because the bloc is plagued by mass unemployment and inequality.”

Mr Dupont-Aignan would seek to put Europe ‘back on the right track’

The hardline leader also pledged to renegotiate the Schengen agreement – a controversial deal that enables border-free travel in much of the EU – and said that the EU’s internal and external borders were “not well protected”.

Mr Dupont-Aignan, who has strived to position himself as the “antidote” to scandal-hit conservative François Fillon, is expected to garner around five per cent of the vote in the presidential election’s first round of voting in April.
